Mandy Moore's 'Tangled' Heroine Not 'Typical Disney Princess'

'She's very independent,' actress/singer tells MTV News of new Rapunzel.By Kara Warner

While the fall-to-Thanksgiving film season is usually rife with Oscar bait, it's also prime time for releasing family films. One such movie is the highly anticipated "Tangled," Disney's updated and traditionally animated take on Rapunzel, starring the vocal talents of Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi.

Kicking off our Fall Movie Preview, we bring you a delightful chat we had with the ever-gracious and lovely Moore, during which she discussed non-typical femmes fatales, singing in front of a 65-piece orchestra and Levi's powerful pipes.
MTV: How is Rapunzel different from the typical femme-fatale characters?
Mandy Moore: She's not the typical femme fatale or the typical Disney princess even, because: A) She doesn't know she's a princess. I think she sort of has this inkling that something isn't quite right in her life, [but] she's just really sort of motivated to find out what else is out there beyond this crazy tower she's lived in for 18 years. Having said that, she's very independent, she can take care of herself, and she's definitely come up with really entertaining ways to keep herself busy.
MTV: Is the Disney take on Rapunzel the same as the original fairy tale?
Moore: Pretty much. She has an overprotective mother who tells her she's not missing out on anything, and it's a big bad world out there and it's too scary and dangerous and she'll be eaten alive, literally, if she decides to venture out into the world.
MTV: What was your reaction to Disney changing the film's original title, in an effort to lure in more young boys?
Moore: I think I was initially a bit taken aback, only because people know the story of Rapunzel, so when you say you're working on "Rapunzel," it's sort of a no-brainer, you don't have to explain it to people. But as the title sort of sunk in, I understood the decision behind changing it. The movie is so great and so cute, and people are going to see the trailer and know what the story is about. I guess you sort of have to leave it up to the brains at the top. They know what they're doing.
MTV: What can you tell us about this particular story? Can you tease any romance?
Moore: She sort of comes face to face with this stranger who precariously ends up in her tower, and he's very handsome [and] he knows it. He's quite the ladies' man, if you will. Somehow, they get roped into going on this adventure together and start to see a different side of one another, and potentially a romance ensues. There's [also] a few musical moments.
MTV: What was that experience like, recording with legendary Disney composer Alan Menken?
Moore: That was fun. I'm definitely the quintessential girl who grew up watching "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin" and the like, so it was probably one of the coolest things I've done thus far, being in the studio with Alan Menken and a 65-piece orchestra. It was such a moment in time. I kept telling myself: "Just be in the moment. Remember this. You're going to want to think about this for years to come." It was really magical and sort of everything you'd want a Disney animated experience to be. As one of the players involved, I was like, "Oh my God!" ... To watch it all come to life, because so much of your job — you're looking at storyboards, you're having things explained to you, but there's nothing tangible to see or get, it has to form in your imagination, which is one of the slightly taxing parts, but also the most fun — to get to be a kid again and go into the depths of your imagination and play around. This, being there with the orchestra and hearing the score sort of come to life and what the feel of the movie was going to be at different parts was like, "Oh, OK, now I really get what we're doing." So that was definitely a moment for me. It was the first time I met Zach [Levi].
MTV: Does Zach actually sing in the film?
Moore: He does, and he's amazing! Oh my God, we had one rehearsal before we went into the studio, and I was so interested [in him], because they wanted to cast actors in the roles who could also sing, and I had no idea that he sang, and it turns out he's like a big musical-theater nut and had that in his background. He has a beautiful voice, but he has the perfect voice for something like this. He's such a sweet guy, and he's so funny in the movie, but I think his voice will astonish people, like, "Wow, where did that come from?"
From the saucy Jessica Alba in "Little Fockers" to James Franco's grueling journey in "127 Hours," the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films' biggest stars.

Lady Gaga Thanks Fans For Twitter Crown

Lady Gaga's millions of fans have another title to call their Mother Monster: Queen of Twitter.
After steadily gaining on Britney Spears, who until recently was the most-followed user on the social-networking site, Gaga surpassed her fellow pop supernova over the weekend by landing over 5.7 million followers. At press time, Gaga's Twitter army clocked in at 5,726,168 deep, besting Brit, who had 5,696,275 followers. Just days ago, the chart-toppers were neck-and-neck, with Spears boasting 5,646,028 Twitter peeps to Gaga's 5,635,460.
When Gaga learned she had dethroned Spears, she took to the Internet to thank the people who made it all possible: her fans. In a video posted online, Gaga doles out heaps of "monster" love to her followers for solidifying her digital dominance.
Sporting a lace headpiece adorned with a sequined Twitter logo and an ornamental Gaga-fied version of the site's familiar bird symbol, the singer addressed her nearly 6 million followers.
"Hello world, this is Lady Gaga, queen of Twitter," said the singer, with a flourish of an illuminated scepter and a sprinkle of glitter; a move that was part-Elizabethan royalty and part-Glinda the Good Witch. "I wanted to thank all my beautiful little monsters for following me. Thank you for beginning my reign as Twitter queen."
The singer then wished her Twitter-dom only the most enjoyable of experiences when logging onto the micro-blogging site.
"May you always have soft cuticles while tweeting," Gaga said wistfully. "May you never have carpal tunnel."
The "Alejandro" singer, who filmed the clip backstage at her Monster Ball Tour stop in Tacoma, Washington, promised to keep the Twitter nonsense to a minimum. "I vow never to partake in celebrity online shenanigans," Gaga said. "And I vow to always tweet and tweet again."
Before signing off, Gaga left her legions of viral fans with a few words of encouragement.
"Just remember that I love you," Gaga said. "And love you yourself. Because little monsters, you were born that way, baby. I love you Twitter. See you at the Monster Ball."

'Glee' Creator On Britney Spears Cameo: 'It Was Like The President Had Come'

'I couldn't get into my own sets at one point, which I thought was hilarious,' Ryan Murphy says.By James Dinh

Britney Spears may be a pop princess, but "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy felt as if the president had stopped by the set during Spears' recent visit to William McKinley High. Murphy dished about what went down when the singer filmed her cameo for the "Britney/Brittany" episode.
"It was literally like the President had come," Murphy told E! Online. "We all had to wear wristbands. I couldn't get into my own sets at one point, which I thought was hilarious."
Murphy thought Spears was moved by the cast's admiration for her. "I think she was really impressed about how so many kids of the show do what they do because they grew up wanting to be Britney Spears," he said. "She was really sweet with them. We had a number with a bunch of 8-year-old dancers in the show and she spent a lot of time talking to them, and they did the number for her ... She was so sweet, she's great with kids, she was so awesome."
But security remained tight, Murphy said, because "everybody was sort of trying to get into the set and find out what the hell she's doing in the episode." What Spears will be doing on the show is still unknown, but a picture the singer tweeted from the set suggests that she may be playing some sort of receptionist.
Aside from hanging with the pop princess on set, the "Glee" creator also got to hear some of Spears' new material. "I got to hear some of the music she's putting out later this fall or early next year," Murphy said. "It's really a great return to form for her; the songs are amazing so I feel she's riding the crest."
And while there has been talk of Madonna tunes blaring the speaker intercoms once again, Murphy has also revealed that Britney "probably" will reprise her cameo spot on "Glee" episodes.
Last week, the singer tweeted photos of herself on set alongside Murphy and castmember Heather Morris. Posing in front of a set that looked similar to the singer's "Me Against the Music" video backdrop, Spears channeled the Madonna look that was donned in their 2003 collaboration.

Emmys Night Belongs To 'Glee,' 'Modern Family'

Host Jimmy Fallon adds slushees and Twitter to the awards-show mix.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Jimmy Fallon onstage at the 62nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards

The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards kicked off not with a bang, but with a splash. Host Jimmy Fallon corralled the cast of the Emmy Award-nominated hit "Glee" for a cold open straight out of McKinley High.
Enlisting stars like Jon Hamm, Tina Fey and Betty White, while dodging an overeager Kate Gosselin, the gang jumped around until Jane Lynch doused Fallon and Fey with a candy-colored slushee, demanding to be added to the song-and-dance number. Then things really got poppin'.
Fallon punched up the Emmys telecast with digital and musical touches similar to those he often uses on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon." He didn't slow-jam any of the categories, but the comedian did strap on an acoustic guitar to introduce sizzle reels recapping the year in television. A few lucky Emmy fans on Twitter got some love when Fallon wove their comments into his intro for presenters like Sofia Vergara, Tina Fey and Jim Parsons. Jim Parsons from "The Big Bang Theory" edged out favored stars like Steve Carell, Tony Shalhoub and Alec Baldwin for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
In addition to new music and technology, new faces dominated the evening, as several Emmy victors took home hardware for the first time. Claire Danes from "Temple Grandin," Eric Stonestreet from "Modern Family," "Glee" scene-stealer Lynch, Archie Panjabi from "The Good Wife" and Aaron Paul from "Breaking Bad" all scored their first trophies. "Glee" golden boy Ryan Murphy also snagged his first Emmy for Directing for a Comedy Series for the pilot of the Fox hit.
Although low on nutty, unscripted live-television moments, the telecast delivered send-ups of some of television's biggest hits. In one clip, the cast of the Outstanding Comedy Series "Modern Family" endures inane suggestions about how to improve the show. Ideas included teaming up with animated potty mouth Stewie from "Family Guy," shooting the show in 3-D and adding the dreamy George Clooney, who also received the night's Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, to the mix.
Fallon also kept the tone light with a tribute to shows we lost over the past year. Manning a pink piano and sporting rose-colored glasses, à la Elton John, Fallon revamped the pop icon's "Candle in the Wind" to honor the canceled "24." Then, busting out his admirable quick-change skills, the comic donned a cardigan, switched up Boyz II Men's "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" and poured out a 40 to commemorate "Law & Order." Then he sported a black emo getup and mussy hair like Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong for a version of "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" to honor "Lost."
In a move likely intended to make the whole affair more relatable to viewers who are not television insiders, the show's announcer, "Daily Show" correspondent John Hodgman, rattled off tidbits about the winners as they took the stage. For instance, Emmy viewers learned that Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series winner Edie Falco's parents are "constantly making meatballs" because she is of Swedish and Italian descent. Categories honoring professionals behind the scenes were precluded by the nominees' anecdotal answers to questions like, "What was the weirdest note a network has given you?" or "What did your mom want you to be when you grew up?"
After lamenting the lack of alcohol at the event and insisting no one in attendance is wild enough to do any real damage on the sauce, "The Office" creator Ricky Gervais resolved the issue by offering the audience trays of beer (although, "True Blood" vampire Alexander Skarsgård ribbed Gervais for giving out non-alcoholic brews).
In one of the more heartfelt moments of the evening, George Clooney accepted his Bob Hope Humanitarian Award to a standing ovation and recounted his experiences with the late comedy legend. An acoustic performance by Jewel set the tone for a presentation honoring late Hollywood names such as Gary Coleman, Brittany Murphy, Lena Horne and Dennis Hopper. The eponymous, real-life inspiration for "Temple Grandin" embraced one of the movie's producers in a bear hug in a refreshingly candid moment when the film won for Outstanding Made for Television Movie.
Conan didn't get to take the stage for his short-lived but much-ballyhooed "Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien" but Jon Hamm and Betty White joked about their "sexual chemistry." We got to see "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson briefly rock out on the bass, check out Sofia Vergara's curvy frame in 3-D and witness Fallon put Lady Gaga to shame with all his costume changes. All in all, it was an interesting night.

Dinosaur hunting in Khon Kaen

The first thing that strikes you when step out of Khon Kaen Airport in Thailand?s dusty northeast is the intense and stifling Issan heat. The second thing is the seemingly misplaced herd of dinosaur statues welcoming you to the city. For tourists expecting a hot climate and an even hotter cuisine, the sight of the Triassic?s finest can be a bit baffling. But Khon Kaen is actually a provincial capital in the Thai northeastern region of Issan, which is also the dinosaur capital of Southeast Asia. The city's semi-pro football team, Khon Kaen FC, is even nicknamed the "T-Rexs."  read more

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.By Gil Kaufman

Adam Lambert performs "Whole Lotta Love" on "American Idol" on Tuesday

Photo: R. Mickshaw/Getty Images/ Fox

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin's 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."
That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.

The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon.
For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997.
Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction.

Drake And Nicki Minaj Tweet About Getting Married

It seems like two members of the Young Money family just got a lot closer. On Friday (August 27), Nicki Minaj and Drake seemingly announced on their Twitter pages that they are married.
"U scurred? @drakkardnoir u ready to make the announcement or wha?" Minaj tweeted Friday afternoon. Drizzy responded about an hour later with, "Baby I am never scared. PROUD is more the word I would use," before tweeting, "Please refer to @nickiminaj as Mrs. Aubrey Drake Graham and dont stare at her too long. She's finally mine. :)."
The hip-hip diva re-tweeted Drake's missive and added, "Yes, its true. Drake and I tied the knot."
A rep for their label had no comment when MTV News reached out Friday.
Hip-hop heads have speculated about Drake and Minaj's relationship before, and buzz spiked when fans heard a very eyebrow-raising line on Drizzy's "Miss Me" single.
"I love Nicki Minaj/ I told her I'd admit it/ I hope one day we get married just to say we f---ing did it/ And girl, I'm f---ing serious/ I'm with it if you with it/ 'Cause your verses turn me on, and your pants are mighty fitted," the Toronto MC spits.
In June, Drizzy told DJ Envy on MTV2's "Sucker Free Countdown" that he had genuine feelings for Minaj. "I've always really, actually, really had a crush on her, always really loved her, and she's always just looked at me as, like, her little brother," Drake said.
However, Minaj batted away any ideas that Drake is anything more than just her sometime partner-in-rhyme.
"Drake does not have a crush on me," Minaj assured Envy. "Drake knows how to get you guys' attention."

Lady Gaga Says Her New Album Is 'Utter Liberation'

Pop star tells i-D magazine she wants to 'create the anthem for my generation.'By James Dinh

Lady Gaga

Photo: Getty Images

Lady Gaga may have caused a stir with her recent talk of sex and drug use, but the singer knows that in the end it all boils down to the music. In the pre-Fall issue of i-D magazine that surfaced online on Friday (August 13), the songstress opens up about what she has planned for her upcoming album.
"The new album is my absolute greatest work I've ever done, and I'm so excited about it," Gaga said of her still-untitled album. "The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life — it's utter liberation. I'm on the quest to create the anthem for my generation for the next decade, so that's what I've done."
While the singer has frequently worked with producers like RedOne ("Bad Romance" and "Just Dance"), Gaga plans to keep her sound fresh with a line of new producers on the forthcoming project. But she's keeping them a secret, saying, "I will never tell because as soon as I tell, everyone starts working with them. So all I can say is that nobody knows who they are. They're all new."
And for those who were wondering if the Elton John-esque ballad "You and I" was an indication of the project's sound, Gaga said, "It's not totally indicative of the new album sound; it's just a really big rock-and-roll hit."
The pop star confirmed that the song, which she first performed at Elton John's White Tie and Tiara Ball in June, will appear on the LP. "I do have these hopes that it could be a great rock crossover record, so I'm going to put my producer's hat on and get it to a place where I feel like it could reach the masses," she said. "It's a beautiful, beautiful lyric and melody. I wrote it at the piano I grew up playing in New York."
Despite the success of Gaga's collaborations with Beyoncé, she said she's "not entirely sure" if she'd like to collaborate with anybody this time around. "At this moment, I don't want to feature anyone; I just want to stand on my own two feet," she said.
But if the pop star does change her mind, there's one female rapper who will please her legions of fans: Nicki Minaj. When i-D asked the singer if she could do them a favor and collaborate with the Young Money darling, Gaga was pensive, saying, "OK, I'll think about it."
And as the Lady Gaga train keeps on rolling, the pop star had a rather interesting response as to how she plans to create longevity in her career: "I will always have as much penis as I do vagina. And, no, I'm not going to explain that; it's part of the answer."

Britney Spears Will 'Kind Of' Play Herself On 'Glee'

'She sort of wants to do a 'Where's Waldo?'-type thing with 'Where's Britney?' ' creator Ryan Murphy reveals.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

Ladies, gentlemen and Gleeks, Ryan Murphy has revealed a few more details about what fans can expect when Britney Spears makes a cameo in an episode of "Glee" dedicated to her and airing next season.

While the show creator wouldn't say exactly what part Spears will have, he did hint that she would be playing some version of herself.
"Well, it's her idea. She sort of wants to do a 'Where's Waldo?'-type thing with 'Where's Britney?' " Murphy told MTV News at the "Eat Pray Love" premiere in New York City on Tuesday night. Spears will "kind of" be playing herself, he added. "Yes, that's all I can say."
With so much anticipation surrounding the upcoming episode, Murphy said the cast is equally pumped to have the pop icon on set. In fact, many of them had long been pushing for a Spears episode.
"You know, I met with Britney Spears years and years and years ago right when '(Hit Me) ... Baby One More Time' came out and I was sort of starting my career, and I've always loved her," he explained. "I think what she's done in turning everything around is remarkable, and the show is just a love letter to her music.
"And the reason we're doing it is because so many of the kids on the show say, 'We grew up with Britney. We want to do Britney,' " Murphy continued. "So I said, 'OK,' but I'm filled with admiration for her."
One Gleek who's particularly excited to get Spears onboard is Heather Morris, who over the weekend at the Teen Choice Awards admitted she couldn't believe Spears might actually show up on set. "That'd be so nerve-racking," she said.
When asked which Britney songs she'd like to perform on the show, Morris said, "I like 'Toxic' the best or the 'Slave' video. It was always her best performance. She's rocking! I don't care what I do."

Chris Brown And Usher Unite Onstage In Jamaica

Brown surprises audience with onstage appearance during Usher's set at Reggae SumFest.By James Dinh

While Chris Brown has always made it clear that he looks to Michael Jackson for inspiration, there are nearly as many parallels to be made between Brown and Usher. And last weekend, Breezy joined Usher on stage during the Reggae SumFest 2010 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The duo wowed audiences in the concluding night of the festival.
Brown had already performed his own set on Friday, tearing through songs like "Run It" and "Forever" and showing off his formidable dancing skills. But it was his surprise appearance during Usher's set the following day that really set the crowd off. According to TheChrisBrownBlog.com, the two were also joined onstage by Elephant Man and later engaged in a dance-off.
Video footage from the performance had not surfaced online at press time, but photos reveal the two singing together and even showing some affection with an onstage hug.
Brown took to Twitter Saturday to thank Jamaica. "I wanna thank you Jamaica for your wonderful embrace last night at the show," he wrote. "Next time well do passa passa ... lmao ... (oh hell naw). Love ya!"
Later on Saturday, he tweeted about performing with Usher. "Me and Usher killin Jamaica right now," he wrote.
When Chris burst on the music scene five years ago, he was overcome with excitement when meeting Usher. "To see him face-to-face, I was like, 'OK, Chris, it's gonna be all right, just chill out right quick. You about to do the song, man, don't be no punk,' " Brown told MTV News about recording a song that was later featured in Usher's 2005 film "In the Mix."

Jeremy Renner To Star In 'Mission: Impossible IV'

'Hurt Locker' actor will appear alongside Tom Cruise in next 'M:I' installment.By Kara Warner

From "The Hurt Locker" to Hawkeye in "The Avengers" to a role opposite superspy Ethan Hunt, Jeremy Renner's career is on the rise, as Paramount announced Thursday (August 26) that the Oscar-nominated actor will appear as an operative alongside Tom Cruise in "Mission: Impossible IV."
According to Deadline, Paramount production chief Adam Goodman feels Renner "has a Daniel Craig quality" that he wants for the role. Sources tell the site that the studio was also looking for an actor who might be able to continue on with the franchise, should Cruise choose not to return in the future (Cruise is expected to return for a fifth installment).
Other actors considered for the role include Tom Hardy ("Inception"), Chris Pine ("Star Trek"), Kevin Zegers, Christopher Egan and Renner's "Hurt Locker" co-star Anthony Mackie.
Although the production has had a few bumps and uncertainties along the way, Cruise has been vocal about his commitment to bring in new talent to the franchise. "My whole thing with the series is always having a new director come on and put their stamp on 'Mission: Impossible,' " he told MTV News recently. "Brian De Palma was first, then John Woo, J.J. Abrams and now Brad Bird, so it will be Brad Bird's 'Mission: Impossible.' "
Regarding his thoughts on the story line — which is, of course, heavily under wraps — Cruise said simply: "It's sick. It's fun, really fun."
Ever since his star-making turn in last year's awards-season darling (and Best Picture winner) "The Hurt Locker," Renner has been lining up a slate of prestigious and high-profile projects. He'll next appear in Ben Affleck's much buzzed about Boston drama "The Town," followed by a stint as superhero Hawkeye in Joss Whedon's "Avengers," and then his role in "Mission: Impossible IV."
The production, directed by Bird, with Cruise and J.J. Abrams producing, is set to begin shooting this fall.

Britney Spears May Cover 'Me Against The Music' On 'Glee'

Pop star tweeted a photo showing her and castmember Heather Morris sporting looks from Madonna duet video.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Heather Morris and Britney Spears on the set of "Glee"

Photo: Facebook

It appears viewers may get a taste of Madonna in Britney Spears' "Glee" episode.
Spears, who has been sending out updates from the set of the Fox megahit, tweeted a picture of herself in a scene reminiscent of her Madonna collaboration, "Me Against the Music." In the picture, Spears faces "Glee" castmember Heather Morris, who is decked out in a suit and blue shirt similar to the gender-bending look the superstar singer sports in the 2003 video. Instead of reprising her original look, though, Spears appears to be taking on Madonna's role, donning an all-white outfit reminiscent of Madge's look in the clip.
The singer accompanied the picture with a Twitter missive referencing the lyrics from the uptempo track: "All my GLEEKERS in the crowd, Grab a partner take it down."
In addition to possibly revamping "Me Against the Music," the upcoming Britney tribute episode will feature the smash hit that started it all. Jenna Ushkowitz confirmed to MTV News earlier this month that Lea Michele will perform a version of " ... Baby One More Time." Ushkowitz also revealed that fans may see a match-up between the "Circus" superstar and the show's in-house Brittany.
"Some old Britney, some new Britney, some Brittany of our Brittany from the glee club. So it should be funny," Ushkowitz said. "We're really excited. I love Britney Spears."
Madonna didn't participate in the making of her "Glee" tribute episode but Spears appears to be having fun on the set.
"We love GLEE! Its GLEEKERIFIC!!!" Spears tweeted on Thursday (August 19). The singer also tweeted about her first day of filming on Wednesday and sent out another picture. "What's up GLEEKS? Having so much fun on set!!" Spears typed. "Can't wait for you guys to see the episode!"
What songs do you hope will turn up in the Britney Spears "Glee" episode? Let us know in the comments below!

Chris Brown Scores Positive Marks In Probation Hearing

Singer is doing 'a good job,' according to Los Angeles judge who presided over his latest court appearance. By Jayson Rodriguez

Photo: Jed Jacobsohn/ Getty Images

Chris Brown once again scored a positive review from a Los Angeles judge as he attended his fourth status hearing on Thursday afternoon (August 26) stemming from his probation for attacking former flame Rihanna in February 2009.
Brown, sporting a white dress shirt and black vest, arrived to the courtroom with his attorney Mark Geragos shortly before 1:45 p.m. PT. The pair went before Judge Patricia Schnegg, who told Brown he was doing "a good job," according to The Associated Press. Judge Schnegg said she received positive reports from both Brown's domestic-violence counselors and his probation officers in Virginia, where he's completing his punishment.
Under the terms of Brown's probation, the singer is on the hook for 180 days of community labor and he was ordered to attend domestic-violence counseling for up to one year. He was also issued a stay-away order by the judge that bars him from communicating or associating with Rihanna.
During his last hearing, the judge confirmed that Brown had completed 290 hours of labor, which represent roughly 20 percent of his required total. His counseling sessions are scheduled to end next month. Brown is due back in court on November 18.
Since his last hearing, his career and reputation have been on the upswing. The singer wowed audiences at this year's BET Awards with a stirring Michael Jackson tribute performance. Brown sang the late singer's "Man in the Mirror," breaking down in tears as he stumbled over the redemptive lyrics.
His independent release, Fan of a Fan, with Lil Wayne protégé Tyga, has spawned the breakout hit "Deuces," which is currently sitting at #2 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart.
What do you think of Chris' progress in the last year? Tell us in the comments.

Inside New 'Avatar' Footage: Beasts, Hometree And Sigourney Weaver

James Cameron's producing partner, Jon Landau, gives MTV News a look at the extra nine minutes.By Eric Ditzian

Zoe Saldana in "Avatar"

Photo: 20th Century Fox

James Cameron started teasing us with talk of deleted "Avatar" footage to be included on the DVD back in December, even before his blue alien epic hit theaters. More than $2.7 billion in box-office receipts later, and much of that footage will be first seen not in home theaters but at the cinema, as a nine-minute-enhanced version of "Avatar" that arrives Friday.

Recently, Cameron spilled some details about what to expect from the special edition, including an expanded death scene for Na'vi warrior Tsu'tey as well as what he playfully calls the "alien kink" sex scene. Late last week, Cameron's longtime producing partner, Jon Landau, gave MTV News a call to illuminate some other new scenes, explain how they choose what new footage to include and discuss the explosion of 3-D since "Avatar" first opened.
MTV: How long has it been since you watched the movie?
Jon Landau: I went away for a vacation finally this summer, and I came back and I watched the new material, and I got excited, because it's material that is organic to the story. You don't look at it and think it's outside of the movie. It adds to it. It's not superfluous.
MTV: "Avatar" was #1 for seven weeks. The special edition is getting a limited release, but are you looking at the calendar and thinking you could have another run at #1?
Landau: I don't think we'll be #1. This is just about appealing to two groups of people: one are fans of the movie that want to return to Pandora, and two are people that have never seen the movie. I can't tell you how many people have said to me, "Gee, I never got to see it, and then it was out of the theaters." It's about servicing those two groups. It's not about being #1. We don't have enough screens.
MTV: Hey, Miley Cyrus' "Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" hit #1 on fewer screens a few years ago.
Landau: That's not the way we're approaching it from an advertising or marketing standpoint. This is about delivering on what we have heard from fans. What we tried to do is make the added material diversified. Some of it is backstory, some is action, some is night by luminescence, so no matter what you enjoyed, you'll be getting more this time.
MTV: So the new footage — is this stuff that just needed some finishing touches or was it material that needed to be built from the ground up?
Landau: A lot of the stuff we had to build from the ground up. There's the Sturmbeest hunt, which [digital-effects studio] Weta had not even started working on. Other scenes with the fan lizards — it was just one shot before, and now there's a whole little sequence where Neytiri and Jake actually play around with them. Weta had finished maybe 50 percent of that. We went back to them and had them finish it off.
MTV: So it's a mix of nearly finished and barely touched material.
Landau: And the stuff that was hardest to trim last time. In a Jim Cameron script, every scene has a purpose. These new scenes all have purpose. One scene talks about the history of Sigourney [Weaver] teaching at the [Na'vi] school, which is something we didn't really do in the original release.
MTV: Cameron recently said "The Hurt Locker" could have been better in 3-D. What's your take — can every film benefit from 3-D?
Landau: Does every film lend itself better to being in color rather than black-and-white?
MTV: I think somebody like Steven Spielberg would answer, "No."
Landau: I don't think you want to do "Schindler's List" in color. I don't think you want to do "Raging Bull" in color. But I believe it's the same type of relationship with 3-D. We see our lives in 3-D. 3-D makes what we do as filmmakers even better. We try and create an immersive experience, and that's what 3-D does. I always said to people that "My Dinner With Andre" would be better in 3-D.
MTV: Seriously?
Landau: Absolutely! It'll put you in the room! It'll put you at the table! To me, one of the most compelling scenes [in "Avatar"] from a 3-D standpoint is the scene where Neytiri throws Jake out of Hometree. It's a dramatic scene, but the 3-D puts you in Hometree, and I become one of the Na'vi. It takes a passive experience and makes it voyeuristic.
MTV: I've always felt that 3-D should complement the storytelling rather than something that's just tacked on for any number of reasons.
Landau: The screen plane has always been a subconscious barrier for the audience's involvement with your movie. If you can make the screen plane disappear, the audience believes it is looking through a window into a world. And good 3-D is looking at a world through a window, not a world popping out of a window.
Check out everything we've got on "Avatar."

Lady Gaga Brings Contagious Energy To Staples Center

After a 72-hour bender of recording new songs, Gaga played the favorites at first of two L.A. shows.By Matt Elias

Lady Gaga performs at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Wednesday

Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images

LOS ANGELES — Fresh from her headlining gig at Lollapalooza, Lady Gaga rolled her Monster Ball into L.A. on Wednesday night for the first of two shows at the Staples Center. Hours before the concert started, Gaga's little monsters marauded around the venue decked out in Gaga gear. The theme for the ball may as well have been a "no pants party," with fans of both sexes parading in just fishnets and leotards.
It wasn't just Mother Monster's kin in attendance — Perez Hilton tweeted that Britney Spears was on hand for the show, though he said she left after a few songs. With the pop princess watching, Gaga took the stage just after 9 p.m. It was everything you would expect from a Gaga production — the sets! the costumes! the lights! — but what can't be overlooked is the energy. Gaga and her dancers gave it their all for two hours and change.
With four major set changes, 19 songs (not including the interstitial tunes) and an arching narrative throughout the show, the Monster Ball seems less of a concert than a Broadway musical at times.
The set kicked off with "Dance in the Dark," "Glitter and Grease" and "Just Dance" (the opening notes of which were played on a keyboard that was hidden under the hood of a broken-down car). Gaga's first wardrobe choice of the night was a pair of oversize purple shades, a giant shoulder-padded purple jacket and a purple leopard-print leotard underneath.
After the first few songs, Gaga addressed her adoring crowd. "The Monster Ball is sexual freedom," she declared. "Tonight in Los Angeles we'll be super freaks and monsters."
And she continued her conversation with the audience throughout the night. With fans on their feet during a rousing rendition of "LoveGame" (encouraged by Gaga's "Now dance, mother----ers!), she thanked them for buying tickets and supporting her. "Tonight, I want you to free yourselves, forget your insecurities."
Next up was "Boys Boys Boys," followed by a brief exit. She returned from beneath the stage on a riser to perform "Money Honey." She then took time to call a fan in the cheap seats and surprise him with tickets closer to the stage. It was a perfect segue to "Telephone," which was one of the most elaborate dance routines and biggest sing-alongs of the night.
But Gaga had to settle the crowd for at least a few minutes during the night. With her piano rising from the beneath the stage, she launched into "Speechless" — which she dedicated to her dad, who was also in attendance. Next was new tune "You and I," proving that all she really needs is her voice and a piano.
The new song was a tease of what's yet to come. Gaga announced that she had been on a 72-hour bender of writing and recording new music. "I want to put it out tomorrow," she said, "but I can't!"
"So Happy I Could Die," "Monster" and "Teeth" kept the show moving until the climactic "Alejandro," "Poker Face" and Paparazzi." At one point, Gaga emerged in a bra and panty set that sprayed sparks from her unmentionable regions.
But the crowd's biggest eruption occurred during the encore. With the curtain still down, Gaga's familiar "oh, oh, oh-oh-oooh" broke over the speakers, and fans instantly recognized "Bad Romance." As fans roared, the curtain lifted to reveal her in a rotating sphere wearing a mirrored angular outfit. It was her 19th song of the concert — with almost as many wardrobe changes — and it was finally time for Gaga to call it a night as her monsters exited the ball sweaty and satisfied.

Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray's Trial Set For January

Murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death.By Gil Kaufman

More than a year after Michael Jackson's death, the pop icon's former personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, was in court Monday (August 23) where a judge finally set a preliminary date of January 4, 2011, in the cardiologist's involuntary-manslaughter trial.
TMZ reported that Murray's legal team won a request to get a fluid sample from Jackson as part of their defense strategy questioning the accuracy of levels of the surgical anesthetic propofol found in Jackson's body. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office determined that Jackson, 50, died as a result of acute propofol intoxication.
Murray has pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter and has admitted to giving Jackson propofol, a strong anesthetic usually used during surgery but allegedly employed by chronic insomniac Jackson as a sleep aid. Murray's lawyers have said the physician did not administer any drugs that "should have" caused Jackson's death. The investigation into his death was equally lengthy, lasting more than eight months, after which Los Angeles prosecutors charged that Murray gave the King of Pop a lethal combination of propofol and other painkillers and sedatives in the hours before the singer was found dead in his rented Los Angeles mansion on June 25, 2009. Murray faces up to four years in prison if convicted.
After hearing from both sides in the case at the January court date, the judge, Michael Pastor, will determine if there is enough evidence to mount a full trial.
Jackson's mother and father, Katherine and Joseph, were in court on Monday, according to Radar Online, sitting in the front row as Judge Pastor set the preliminary hearing date. Pastor granted a protective order covering all evidence in the criminal case, meaning it cannot be released to anyone other than the lawyers, paralegals and investigators in the case.
Murray's defense team reportedly asked for access to three fluids collected by the coroner's office, including ones taken from syringes and an IV tube to re-examine test results. Pastor ruled that the coroner's office must preserve the samples, and if defense attorneys and prosecutors cannot agree on the request, he will schedule a hearing on the matter.
After court let out, a group of Jackson supporters gathered and sang an impromptu verse that featured the lines, "Conrad Murray is a cold man," while holding up signs that read "Justice for Michael Jackson" and "Love Unites Us, Peace Drives Us, Judgment Day 4 All."

'Breaking Dawn' Star Nikki Reed Talks Exploring Rosalie's Backstory

'With 'Breaking Dawn,' we're only going to go deeper into that,' actress says of Rosalie's history in next 'Twilight' installment.By Kara Warner

Nikki Reed

Photo: MTV News

As avid book readers well know, once a movie studio decides to adapt a favorite novel into a feature film, certain changes occur. With regard to Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight Saga," the filmmakers and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg have done their best to stay as true to the source material as possible. But one expository aspect that is lost from book to screen is the various backstories of the supporting characters.

When MTV News recently caught up with actress Nikki Reed, who was out promoting her upcoming indie "Last Day of Summer," she talked about the challenge of portraying Rosalie's relatability for non-book readers, as well as making the most of her screen time.
"I find that people who've read the books kind of understand Rosalie, and that's been the biggest challenge with playing her — when you make this series, clearly it has to revolve around this epic love story," Reed said of the big three: Edward (Robert Pattinson), Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner). "The rest of us are kind of fighting in the background to have any kind of moment. You're always afraid that the moment you do have, you'll overdo because you wanted to have something behind it," she explained. "Even if it's just a look or a sentence or a glance."
Reed said she was happy to explore some of Rosalie's backstory in "Eclipse," and that she hopes she'll get to dive into a bit more of her vamp's history in "Breaking Dawn."
"With 'Breaking Dawn,' we're only going to go deeper into that. I haven't read the script — I don't know what it's going to be like — but I think Melissa's done a great job in keeping them pretty close to the books. I can't think of anything we've missed in the films. I have faith that Bella and I are going to get really close."

After a bit of a lackadaisical day yesterday I met up with Darion for an evening showing of the cinematic masterpiece film Piranha 3D: The film, which I loved immensely, inspired so much in me that I had a hard time coming up with a concise way to adequately convey just how much I liked [...]

Katy Perry, Usher Top Billboard's New Songs Of Summer Chart

Lady Gaga, Drake, Eminem also make top 10 of new list, which ranks biggest summer jams.By James Montgomery

It would appear, after years spent debating, deliberating, dissecting and disputing, that there is finally a better way to determine just what is the biggest Summer Jam of the year ... and of the past 25 years, too.

That's because Billboard just unveiled its brand-new Songs of the Summer chart, which ranks the Top 10 summer jams "based on actual performance on the Billboard Hot 100, from the June 12, 2010, chart date through the most-recent chart."
Not surprisingly, Katy Perry's "California Gurls" holds the top spot on the chart. After all, the song has been #1 on the Hot 100 for six straight weeks. Usher's "OMG" — which had previously nabbed the top spot on the Hot 100 — is in at #2, followed by B.o.B and Hayley Williams' "Airplanes," and the Travie McCoy/ Bruno Mars track "Billionaire." Ke$ha's "Your Love Is My Drug" rounds out the Top 5.
Lady Gaga's "Alejandro" — which won MTV's Summer Jam Sweepstakes last month — is at #6, Taio Cruz's "Break Your Heart" is at #7, Drake's "Find Your Love" is at #8, Eminem's "Not Afraid" is at #9 and Mike Posner's "Cooler Than Me" closes out the Top 10.
The "Songs of the Summer" chart will run until September 9, when Billboard will crown a champion. So it's still plenty early, which means that you probably can expect to see newer Hot 100 entries — like Eminem's hard-charging "Love the Way You Lie," which sits at #2 on the chart after just three weeks — to make a dent on the Summer chart as well. Hot 100 rankings are based on radio play and sales.
Along with the Summer chart, Billboard also unveiled a comprehensive list of the biggest summer songs of the past quarter-century, as determined by impact on the Hot 100 and something called "an inverse point system, with weeks at #1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least." For music obsessives, it's a treat. And for trivia buffs, it finally provides an answer to the question "Who had the biggest summer song in 1988?" (Steve Winwood!) So, really, everyone wins.

Exclusive: Raekwon Talks Finished Justin Bieber Remix With Kanye West

'I definitely didn't give him anything that I thought was too hot to be spoken on by a 16-year-old,' Rae tells MTV News.By Shaheem Reid

Kanye West's Twitter spawned one of the most talked-about (and unexpected) musical collaborations in years — and the song was only finished Wednesday.

West and Justin Bieber started talking on Twitter a few days ago about making a remix of the Biebs' "Runaway Love." 'Ye suggested Raekwon get involved, and the next day, the Chef and the Louis Vuitton Don were in New York's Electric Lady Studios knocking out verses.
"Kanye was just being Kanye," Rae told MTV News about the session. "He was definitely excited. The energy in the room was already speaking for itself. It was time to get up and have fun on the track together. We was drinking, laughing, being normal cats. At the same time, we had a houseful of celebrities in the house as well. [Kanye] was moving through the facility checking out the studios he had. He had three studios in there.
"You had Akon in the building. Mos Def was just chillin'. Mos is a good friend of 'Ye's," Rae added. "You had Charlie Wilson, the legendary cat from the Gap Band. Chris Rock walked in. These are guys that really respect who 'Ye is. 'Ye's energy is cool. He's a normal cat. A normal Chicago/world cat. Very mature. Having a great time."
Rae said his followers on Twitter alerted him that Kanye and JB were talking on their pages about collaborating and had brought his name up. He didn't hesitate to let them know he wanted in.
"This is a conversation that extended from the Twitter thing," the Staten Island general explained. "Kanye was having a conversation with Justin over the Twitter. They came up with this great idea to have me involved. I was told to check it out and see what they talking about. They was right. They was saying, 'This is something Kanye and Justin want to do.' So automatically, first thing I do is hit them back and say I'm with it. Definitely, it created a movement. A lot of people want to see what could be the outcome to this remix. It's definitely a hot remix."
For the past year, most of Rae's accolades have been coming via his raw street music, most exemplified by 2009's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II LP. Obviously, Rae didn't go into the "Pyrex Vision" or "Surgical Gloves" zone with his rhymes for Bieber's fanbase.
"All I did was ride the beat and listen to what he was singing to," Chef said of his rhymes on the "Runaway Love" remix. "I can go basic when I want to. I can go rated R, I can go rated PG. I definitely didn't give him anything that I thought was too hot to be spoken on by a 16-year-old. I know how to read beats, and listening to the record, I just complemented. At the end of my 16 [bars], when you do hear Justin coming, it fits and it's a great sound. I didn't go crazy. One thing people gotta recognize about me, I'm the Chef. I know how to make spicy food, I know how to make food that ain't spicy. I made something that fit the criteria.
"Me and Kanye are just here to sprinkle a little bit more love on this man's success and all our success," he added.
Rae didn't exactly have Bieber Fever before this collabo, but he respects the teen's work. Chef said he recognized Bieber's star quality and potential when he saw him perform last year. The MC hasn't heard an entire Justin album yet, but his kids are big fans.
The "Runaway Love" remix has also sparked the opportunity for more Raekwon/ Kanye West collaborations. "We sat down and we talked about it, we talked about doing things in the future. This is just the beginning," the Wu-Tang co-founder revealed. "This is something that was supposed to happen a long time ago. He started throwing on them tracks, ideas started coming to my head. I was like, 'If this cat produces a Rae and Ghost record, what could come out of it?' Every album, he evolves. He's always doing the extra, or absurd, the abnormal, but it sounds crazy."
On Tuesday, Rae released his Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II: Gold Edition on iTunes. The set includes new songs, remixes and music videos. The project helps commemorate the 15th anniversary of his classic first Linx.

Drake Channels Frank Sinatra In VMA Promo

'I like to get into characters,' former TV star says on the set of his '50s-themed shoot.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Drake is taking it way back for his 2010 MTV Video Music Awards promo.
Donning a dapper suit, complete with a gentlemanly pocket square, the singer and rapper is surrounded by midcentury glamour as he takes the mic for a commercial touting his VMA appearance. The Toronto lyricist makes a dramatic entrance under a brightly lit "Drake" marquee and steps onto a stage populated by a sprawling big band sporting white jackets.
"I get to channel my inner [Frank] Sinatra," Drizzy — who is up for Moonmen for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Male Video — said on the set. "In the acting world, you gotta have reference points. I like to get into characters."
Sinatra isn't the only legend that influences Drake's gentlemanly style in the promo. The "Degrassi" actor-turned-chart-topping MC also looked to Denzel Washington's troubled trumpeter in Spike Lee's 1990 flick "Mo' Better Blues."
" 'Mo' Better Blues' is like one of my favorite movies of all time. This reminds me of Denzel, who played a character [called] Bleek Gilliam," Drake explained. "I'm trying to channel that today."
Drake may have mined the mannerisms of a pair of jazzy icons for the promo, but the period set and crew of extras donning retro looks also helped the MC get in character.
"There's a '50s theme. They got it right, though. They got the set and the wardrobe," Drake said. "I feel like I'm here."
