It was the ash cloud that took the long way around the globe.
From Chile's Puyehue volcano it crossed the Atlantic, Indian and Southern oceans and hovered at around 25,000 feet above south-eastern Australia and New Zealand. The cloud then reversed, descended and headed west.
Five days later, it seems the cloud is finally dispersing.
It has left tens of thousands of stranded air travelers in its wake. It initially disrupted flight schedules in Melbourne, Hobart and New Zealand. Then it was Adelaide and Perth's turn.
Travelers are taking to the skies again -- barring those on Tiger Airways flights between Melbourne and Perth.
